About Us

The Blackburn Clinic was established by Emeritus Professor Neil Carson AO in 1952 and the premises was completely rebuilt in 1992.

Blackburn Clinic Medical Services (BCMS) provides administrative, business and clinical support and facilities to a variety of doctors. Blackburn Clinic is also a Licensed Travel Vaccination Centre. We support general practitioners at three suites within the same building at 195 Whitehorse Road. Patients may see their GP at any of:

Suite 5—Blackburn Clinic and

Suite 2– Blackburn Specialist Centre and

Suite 8 – Blackburn Clinic Carson Suite.

The BCMS policies and procedures are uniform across all sites. All sites provide GPs with secure access to patient clinical data and share the same system for patient appointments.

Please see the Doctors page for the details of which GPs consult at each Suite.

The GPs have an arrangement to see all patients during the after hours period, so when the Blackburn Specialist Centre and the Carson Suite are closed, patients may attend the Blackburn Clinic suite.

The doctors who choose to provide services from Blackburn Clinic sites are committed to providing the highest level of medical care for all patients, of varying ages and needs.

The GPs who consult from Blackburn Clinic teach medical students from Monash University and the University of Melbourne, and also supervise registrars undertaking GP specialist training with the Royal Australian College of General Practice.

BCMS participates in the MedicineInsight program, which is overseen by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. De-identified patient data is shared with the Commission for the purpose of providing real-world insights into how health technologies, medicines (including vaccines) and medical tests are used in primary care. These insights provide the GPs with quality improvement measures for clinical practice and health outcomes for patients, and support policy development and identify areas of need in primary health care and population health. See our Patient Info page for further detail or to opt-out.

Accreditation

Blackburn Clinic, the general practice at Blackburn Specialist Centre and Blackburn Clinic Carson Suite are fully accredited practice locations with Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited. Patient medical records could be confidentially reviewed as part of the accreditation process by AGPAL surveyors.

History

Dr Neil Carson was the founding GP of Blackburn Clinic. His practice commenced in 1952. It is fitting that in March 2022 the Carson Suite was opened, which is situated on the section of land at 195 Whitehorse Road that held Neil Carson’s house. He consulted from his house when he founded the practice in 1952.
